The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux

Updated: Sep 24

An enthralling story of romance, intrigue, and mystery awaits you. "The Phantom of the Opera" by Gaston Leroux is one of the most beloved stories of all time. Spectators and readers alike will be captivated by this story's haunting phantom music and strange masked ballroom dances.

About the Author

Gaston Leroux was born in Normandy but moved back to Paris when he was eighteen years old to pursue a career in journalism and law. He covered the Russian Revolution of 1905 and then published a mystery fiction, The Mystery of the Yellow Room, serially. Leroux chose to forego a career in journalism in favor of fiction after the success of this narrative, which follows an assassin as he escapes from a guarded room. He wrote almost forty novels and short stories during his lifetime, one of which was the 1909–1910 serialization of The Phantom of the Opera. In 1909, he was awarded the rank of "Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur," the highest French accolade for distinguished national service.

Historical Context

The 1871 Paris Commune, a two-month revolutionary government that began after France's surrender in the 1870 Franco-Prussian War, is like the opera's Phantom. Following the signing of the armistice by the French government, the occupying occupiers were met with resistance from Paris's working and middle classes, supported by the National Guard. A radical change was desired: democratic elections. In a revolutionary government based on socialist principles of redistribution of power, the Paris Commune was founded when the National Guard took possession of crucial government buildings.

The Commune ended when the national army re-entered Paris and unleashed a series of crimes that would be dubbed "Bloody Week" to eliminate any opposition. The bodies of the "Communards," or members of the Commune, were scattered in unmarked graves around the city. One historical event that Phantom of the Opera repeatedly references is the construction of the Palais Garnier, the Paris Opera House. Construction began in 1861 but was stopped during the siege of Paris. The journalistic work of Gaston Leroux, who revealed the presence of a Commune prison cell beneath the Palais Garnier, likely served as inspiration for his novel.
